How to Reach Akkalkot
The nearest railway station to Akkalkot is Akkalkot Road Railway Station. However, very few trains from other parts of India stop at Akkalkot, so you can travel to Solapur Railway Station instead. Solapur is 40 km from Akkalkot, and government ST buses are available every 20 to 30 minutes from Solapur to Akkalkot. For a fare of ₹50, these buses will take you to Akkalkot in about two hours. After arriving in Akkalkot, we freshened up at a Bhakt Niwas (devotee guesthouse), had a light breakfast, and then set out for Swami Ji’s darshan.
History and Significance of Swami Samarth Maharaj
Jai Swami Samarth Maharaj! Swami Samarth Maharaj is regarded as the third incarnation of Lord Dattatreya. He first took human form in Punjab, India, and spent 300 years meditating in dense forests. During his penance, an anthill formed around him, and he emerged from it. After appearing, Swami Ji traveled to Kashi for the welfare of humanity, visited the Kali Mata temple in Kolkata, and wandered along the banks of the Ganga River.
He visited all the sacred sites of Lord Dattatreya, from Kedarnath to Girnar, and eventually arrived in the holy land of Akkalkot in 1857 via Pandharpur. He stayed in Akkalkot for 22 years, often sitting under a large banyan tree (Vatavriksha). It was under this same banyan tree that he ended his human form. We’ve now reached the Samadhi Math Temple, which is a 10-minute walk from the Vatavriksha Temple.
Key Places to Visit in Akkalkot
Swami Samarth Maharaj used to come to this place every evening after roaming around Akkalkot. At the back of the Samadhi Temple, you’ll find the house (Wada) of Swami Ji’s devoted follower, Salappa Maharaj. Salappa Maharaj’s descendants still live here, and this is where Swami Samarth Maharaj himself resided. In this house, you’ll see a well whose water was manifested by Swami Ji himself. You can also see Swami Ji’s padukas (footwear), the rudraksha mala he wore, and his clothes on display.
Just 5 minutes from the Samadhi Temple is the Khandoba Temple. When Swami Samarth Maharaj first arrived in Akkalkot in 1857, he stayed at this temple before moving to Salappa Maharaj’s house. Make sure to visit this temple as well.
We’ve now reached the palace of Akkalkot’s royal family. Entry to the palace requires a ₹1 ticket. Currently, the palace is under renovation at a cost of ₹225 crore to restore it to its former glory. A large statue of Swami Samarth Maharaj is being constructed here. Inside the palace museum, you can see 12-foot-long guns, swords of kings and emperors, and other historical artifacts.
We’re now at a spot where, if you look closely, you can see the footprints of Swami Samarth Maharaj preserved in stone boxes. We’re currently inside the Guru Temple, also known as Shishya Balappa’s Math, which is just 5 minutes from the main temple. Swami Samarth Maharaj himself gifted his padukas to this place. Here, Swami Ji once held a Shivalinga in his hand and placed it into a fire. That Shivalinga is still present here, and you can have its darshan.
Prasadam and Annadanam
After visiting all the sites in Akkalkot, we’ve arrived at the Prasadalaya (dining hall), which is just 2 minutes from the main Vatavriksha Temple. The Swami Samarth Ann Chhatra Mandal provides free prasadam to devotees. After offering naivedya to Swami Ji, the dining hall operates from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM and from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
Swami Samarth Vatika Udyan
After having prasadam, we’ve come to the Swami Samarth Vatika Udyan, a garden located within the premises of the Prasadalaya and Bhakt Niwas. The garden is open from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM and from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Entry requires a ₹10 ticket. The garden features beautiful landscapes, fountains, and play areas for children. After completing your darshan in Akkalkot, you should definitely visit this garden with your family and friends.
Accommodation Options in Akkalkot
For devotees visiting Akkalkot, there are three Bhakt Niwas facilities for accommodation. Two of them, Yatri Bhakt Niwas Sthan and Yatri Bhuvan Bhakt Niwas, are very close to the temple. The third Bhakt Niwas is 10 minutes away. In the Yatri Niwas building, there’s a general hall and dormitory system. You can stay in the general hall for ₹100 per night or in the dormitory for ₹150 per night. The washrooms and bathrooms here are shared, and during peak times, you might feel uncomfortable due to the crowd.
Near the Yatri Niwas building, you’ll find Yatri Bhuvan Bhakt Niwas, where AC and non-AC rooms are available from ₹700 to ₹2700. These rooms come with attached bathrooms, making it a comfortable stay for families. The third Bhakt Niwas, located 10 minutes from the temple, is a large facility that can accommodate many devotees at once. Here, AC and non-AC rooms are available from ₹600 to ₹2000. Note that bookings for all Bhakt Niwas facilities in Akkalkot must be made in person—online booking is not available.
