How to Reach the Temple

Chilkur Balaji Temple is one of the most famous temples in Hyderabad, located in Ranga Reddy district, Telangana, close to Hyderabad. It’s about 25 km from Mehdipatnam. For those traveling by bus, there’s a bus available from Mehdipatnam every half hour directly to the temple. There are also direct buses from many other places to Chilkur Balaji Temple.

But from Mehdipatnam, you get a bus every half hour directly to the temple. Here’s the starting arch of the temple. From here, the temple is about 2 km away.

You’ll also see accommodations available nearby. For those coming from far-off places, rooms are continuously available here. There are also several hotels nearby.

Accommodation and Temple Timings

If you need rooms, they’re available even close to the temple, so people coming from a distance won’t face any issues. As for temple timings, it’s open from 6 AM to 1 PM in the morning and from 4 PM to 7 PM in the evening.

Managing the Crowd

…the rush is tremendous. The entire parking area is here bike parking costs ₹20, and car parking costs ₹40. There’s also a bus stop right next to the parking area where direct buses arrive. Once you park and move forward, many people approach you, offering coconuts or a place to keep your footwear.

Coconut and Footwear Arrangements

They keep coming to you, and even if you try to stop them, they don’t stop. They take you to a place where they ask you to leave your footwear and offer coconuts or tulsi garlands, saying it’s for the deity. But they don’t actually offer these to the deity.

You just break the coconut outside and take it with you; they don’t accept it inside. You can bring coconuts from home if you want. There’s also a footwear stand right here.

Tonsure and Coconut Costs

Next to the footwear stand, there’s a place for tonsure (head-shaving). If you want to offer tonsure, it’s right in front of you. The tonsure offered here reaches the deity.

But the coconut vendors here demand a lot. We ended up paying ₹50 just for a coconut. After that, we headed for darshan. Since we went in the morning, the rush was a bit less, but by noon, around 12 PM…

Darshan Experience

…the crowd was indescribable! We also got namam (sacred mark) applied for our kid and ourselves. You can get it done if you like. Here, everyone affectionately calls the deity Visa Balaji.

Why? Back when this temple was newly established, engineering colleges were just starting. Many engineering students would come here, pray fervently, and ask for visas to go abroad.

Why Visa Balaji?

As soon as they prayed, they reportedly got their visas! That’s why the deity here is also called Visa Balaji. We entered the temple, and this is the place where coconuts are broken.

Due to the rush, there are lines, but for us, it was easy as the crowd was less when we went. They break the coconut and give you half of it to take with you; it’s not offered to the deity.

Rules Inside the Temple

bile phones are not allowed inside. Once you enter, you’re not supposed to use your phone and should focus only on the deity. We had a wonderful darshan. The specialty here is that there’s no hundi (donation box), and they don’t accept offerings.

Even VIPs have to stand in the same line—no distinction between rich and poor. Our darshan was absolutely wonderful, and we felt very happy.

Post-Darshan Activities

After coming out, you can use your phone again. You can see people sitting here, but inside the temple, no one is allowed to sit. People keep coming, stand in line, have darshan, and leave. I’m showing you the temple from outside—it’s right there. People sit outside, eat prasadam, and there are stalls selling books like the Bhagavad Gita.

Additional Attractions at the Temple

You can see the line there, and there’s a Shivalingam too. Earlier, you could touch the Shivalingam and offer prayers, but now you can only pray from a distance. As you exit the temple, you’ll see many shops selling various items.

Now, let’s get to the main point pradakshina (circumambulation). The unique thing about this temple is the pradakshina.

Significance of Pradakshina

When you say Chilkur Balaji, everyone thinks of pradakshina. The rule here is to make a wish and circumambulate the temple 11 times. Once your wish is fulfilled, you must circumambulate 108 times. Many people keep doing pradakshina here and don’t leave without doing it. One pradakshina outside the temple is equivalent to 11 pradakshinas inside.

Pradakshina Rules and Timings

Many people vow to do 108 pradakshinas. You can do pradakshinas inside the temple from Monday to Thursday, in the morning until half an hour before closing. You can also do it in the evening from 4 PM to 7 PM, but only from Monday to Thursday. Inside pradakshinas are called Maha Pradakshina. One pradakshina outside equals 11 inside.

That’s why people doing it outside only need to do 11 pradakshinas, which counts as 108. The priest there explained this. During special occasions, public holidays, or Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, inside pradakshinas are not allowed, and you must do them outside, called Maha Pradakshina. These are longer. You can see the deity’s main entrance and the flagpole there.

Maha Pradakshina Details

The deity is behind the flagpole. You circumambulate from there, and it’s considered a Maha Pradakshina. We did 11 pradakshinas outside since it was Christmas Day, and inside pradakshinas weren’t allowed. During holidays or weekends, only outside pradakshinas are permitted, and sitting inside isn’t allowed either.

History of Chilkur Balaji Temple

Let’s talk about the history of this amazing Chilkur Balaji Temple. Long ago, a devotee of Lord Srinivasa used to visit Tirupati every year to have darshan of the Seven Hills Lord. One day, due to ill health, he couldn’t go to Tirupati and was very upset. Lord Venkateswara appeared in his dream and said, “Don’t worry. Even if you can’t come to Tirupati, I’ve manifested in a forest for you. Go to that place, dig, and you’ll find me.”

The devotee went to the place from the dream and started digging a mound. Suddenly, the tool hit a stone idol, and blood started oozing from it. Shocked, he thought he had damaged the deity’s idol and felt terrible. Then, he heard the Lord’s voice saying, “Wash the idol with milk.” When he did, the idol of Sri Venkateswara with Sridevi and Bhudevi was revealed.

Finding three deities in one idol is very rare. The idol was consecrated according to scriptures, and a temple was built. This self-manifested deity is worshipped with great devotion by devotees from both Telugu states and beyond. In 1963, Goddess Rajyalakshmi was also consecrated here. She is depicted with three hands holding lotuses and blessing devotees with the fourth.

Additional Temple Features

While doing Maha Pradakshina, you’ll see a peepal tree with a Hanuman temple beneath it, where beautiful pujas are performed. They also offer annadanam (free food) on Fridays from 1:30 PM to 2 PM near the goshala (cow shelter). You’ll also see the deity’s chariot near the temple and a peepal tree where people tie threads for children or other wishes.
