Kaleshwaram Temple Darshan Overview
Kaleshwaram is a village in Mahadevpur Mandal, Jayashankar Bhupalpally district in the Indian state of Telangana. The name “Kaleshwaram Darshan” is often interchangeably used with the name of the famous Kaleshwaram Temple.
Kaleshwaram is situated at the confluence of two rivers – the Godavari River and its tributary, the Pranahita (also called Saraswati) river. It is popularly referred to as “Southern Kashi” or the “Second Kashi” of India. It is 277 km from Hyderabad, 125 km from Karimnagar, and 115 km from Warangal. Other notable places within the vicinity include Ramagundam railway station (95 km), Godavarikhani (90 km), Parkal (75 km), and Manthani (60 km). It is also 16.5 km from the Sironcha district of Maharashtra.
Kaleshwaram is an important Shaiva pilgrimage center and one among the three Trilinga Kshetras, which are the sacred places of Lord Shiva. It houses the famous **Sri Kaleswara Mukteshwara Temple, with two Shiva Lingas on the same platform. It is an exclusive temple in which both Kaleswara and Mukteswara are worshipped; the former is first worshipped.
It is said that the temple was established by King Yamadharma. The consort of Kaleswara is Sri Sada Purna Amma, and that of Mukteswara is Sri Annapurna Amma. Very interestingly, the temple has a speciality that at the top of Mukteshwara Lingam, there are two nostrils, and it does not overflow even when water is poured; it will flow into the Godavari river, which lies 1 kilometer from the temple.
Another triangular form in the temple is called Yamakonam and whoever passes through without touching one’s head is prawn from the god Yama. Another strange feature-the stone Nandi facing the temple. Nandi faces south during Dakshinayanam and north during Uttarayanam.
This temple is also supposed to be a place of five rivers confluence- Vadara, Vainya, Pranitha, Godavari and Saraswati. It is said to be the Triveni Sangam – where the waters of rivers Godavari, Pranahita, and Saraswati converge.
To this temple complex are added other shrines for Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, Mahasaraswati, Lord Brahma, Surya and Sri Rama. Not too far from here is the temple of Adi Mukteswara.
Temple Legend (Sthalapurana):
It is said that the Brahmin maiden Gautami, after seeing the Kashi Kshetra on the banks of the Ganges, did penance here. As an empowerment of her reveres and devotion, Lord Shiva blessed her and appeared in two forms, creating two Shiva Lingas in this place, which leads to the unique dual worship found in Kaleshwaram today.
