Location and How to Reach
This temple is located in Muramulla village, East Godavari, Andhra Pradesh. How to reach the temple, its history, and its unique features are things many people are unaware of, and we will explore them in this article.
For those coming from the two Telugu states, trains are available. For people traveling from Hyderabad, the Gautami Express from Secunderabad is an option. You can reach Kakinada early in the morning, and from there, the bus stop is within walking distance.
Alternatively, you can book a room in Kakinada, freshen up, and take a bus to Amalapuram. Get off at Muramulla, and the temple is within a 1-kilometer walking distance. Autos are also available if needed.
Historical Story of the Temple
The story begins with the Daksha Yagna. Daksha Prajapati, the father of Goddess Sati, performed a yagna but did not invite Lord Shiva. However, Sati, excited to visit her parental home, attended the event.
There, she faced humiliation and immolated herself in a yogic fire. Enraged upon hearing this, Lord Shiva, in his fury, plucked a strand of his matted hair and struck it on the ground, giving rise to Veerabhadra. Veerabhadra destroyed Daksha’s yagna and beheaded him. Even then, Shiva’s anger did not subside, and in his fierce tandava dance, he reached the banks of the Godavari River.
Manifestation of Bhadrakali
Veerabhadra thrust his sword into the ground, which is called a “Pattisamu.” Even after immersing himself in the river, his anger did not subside. All the deities then requested the Adi Parashakti (Goddess) to calm Veerabhadra. The Goddess manifested as Bhadrakali from her 16 kalas (aspects) at the spot where Veerabhadra had thrust his sword.
She appeared as Bhadrakali and performed a dance, chanting “Sharaba Sharaba.” However, Veerabhadra’s anger still did not subside. So, Bhadrakali immersed herself in the Godavari River and emerged as a 16-year-old maiden.
The Divine Marriage
Despite all the destruction, Veerabhadra’s anger persisted until he saw the 16-year-old maiden, which calmed him. He then held her hand and asked her to marry him. As they proceeded to get married, they came across a group of sages (muni mandali) at an ashram-like place.
The sages agreed to conduct the marriage. Over time, this muni mandali area became known as Muramulla. Instead of sitting on separate seats, the couple was seated on a single seat for the wedding.
After the marriage, Veerabhadra transformed into a lingam, and the Goddess took the form of Bhadrakali. Thus, they appear as Shiva and Parvati on a single seat, giving darshan as Bhadrakali Sametha Veereswara Swamy.
To ensure Veerabhadra’s anger does not resurface, a daily wedding ceremony is performed. This is called “Nitya Kalyanam Pacha Thoranam” (daily wedding with green decorations). This temple is located in Muramulla village, East Godavari, Andhra Pradesh, near the Vridha Gautami River.
Additional Historical Context
If you want to learn more about the Daksha Yagna, Pancha Ramas, or Shakti Peethas, I’ve made a detailed video about Draksharama on our channel. You can check it out for more information. The story I’ve shared is also depicted briefly near the temple for visitors to see.
Long ago, this temple was submerged in a Godavari flood. Later, the deity appeared in a dream to the local king, instructing him to retrieve the submerged idol from the Godavari River and install it where it felt heavy. That’s where the current temple stands. Previously, the temple was located elsewhere.
Temple Darshan
Let’s now visit Veereswara Swamy. At the entrance, you’ll see statues of Bharadwaja Maharshi and Gautama Maharshi. Upon entering, Lord Ganesha gives darshan first, followed by Bhadrakali Sametha Veereswara Swamy.
The sight is so mesmerizing that two eyes are not enough. The Goddess, with four arms, stands beside Lord Shiva. Outside, there’s a statue of Veerabhadra, and the Shiva lingam here is called Veereswara Swamy.
Unique Features of the Temple
Now that we’ve learned the temple’s history, let’s explore its specialties. A unique feature of Muramulla is that while most Shiva temples have a Vishnu temple nearby, here, within this fierce Shiva temple, there’s a temple for Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy, the protector. You can visit that temple too.
The specialty of this Veereswara Swamy temple is that if your marriage is delayed for any reason—be it doshas, health issues, or financial problems—bringing your parents here, performing the kalyanam, and praying to Lord Shiva ensures the marriage happens within a year.
Newlyweds also come here to perform the kalyanam as a vow. It’s believed that even if there’s just a 1% chance, visiting and praying here will lead to marriage. The daily kalyanam is performed whether devotees are present or not, symbolizing peace for Veereswara Swamy. This temple is a must-visit.
Temple Timings and Rituals
The temple timings are 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. During the pooja, the lingam is first anointed with Panchamrutham. Daily abhishekams continue until 10:00 AM, and the kalyanam is performed at night. On the deity’s birth star, Arudra Nakshatram, a Rudra Homam is conducted. For the Goddess, a Chandi Homam is performed on Pournami. During Maha Shivaratri, a Laksharchana with bilva leaves is held, and during Vaishakha Shuddha Chavithi, a five-day Brahmotsavam is celebrated.
The next major festival after Maha Shivaratri is in Shravana Masam, where a Laksh Rudraksha Archana and abhishekam with water from 12 rivers (like Ganga, Narmada, Tungabhadra, Kaveri, Sindhu) are performed. In Karthika Masam, special utsavams are held for a month. These are the temple’s specialties.
