Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu The temple is revered by the Hindus to Lord Vishnu called as Sarangapani or the holder of the bow (Sarangam in Sanskrit,pani in Sanskrit). One of the 108 Divya Desams, Divine Vishnu temples sung in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham by the Alvars it is also one of the Pancharanga Kshetterms along the Kaveri River. The temple built during the Pallava age with major contributions made by the Chola, Vijayanagara and the Nayaka is a majestic 173 foot temple constructed in eleven tier gopuram style with elaborate carvings.

It has its main shrine in the form of a chariot that signifies the descent of Vishnu in Vaikuntha. Under the Vaideeka Vimana in which is a reclining pose of the deity, he is worshipped together with Goddess Lakshmi called Komalavalli. Its spiritual relevance is backed by the Potramarai tank which has its own legend surrounding it narrating the life of sage Hemarishi. Temple holds six ritual offerings and 12 festivals each year with the annual Chithirai chariot festival being the most famous one attracting worshippers because of its colourful parades and religious atmosphere.
