History of the Baidyanath Dham Temple

According to the shiva puranas there was a demon king named Ravana, He is the most criticle devotee of Lord Shiva, he performed intense penance in the Himalayas to please him. Ravana offered nine of his ten heads as a sacrifice to the shiva for the sake of his devotion. As he was about to offer the tenth Shiva appeared pleased with his devotion and healed his severed heads among all the nine which he removed. Ravana requested to take the Kamna Linga (a form of Shiva’s lingam) to Lanka. Shiva agreed but make a condition on that if the lingam was placed on the ground, it would stay there forever.

The gods worried about Ravana’s growing power so they planned to get the Lord Vishnu’s help. Vishnu release Varuna who is the god of water in the hindu mythology, he entered Ravana’s stomach and causing an urge to urinate when Ravana reached Deoghar. Vishnu disguised as a cowherd named Baiju took the lingam from Ravana. But the ravan Unable to wait so he handed the lingam to Baiju and went to relieve himself from the varuna. Due to Varuna’s influence Ravana took too long, and Baiju placed the lingam on the ground. When Ravana returned he could not lift it and in frustration, pressed his thumb into it, leaving a mark still visible today. Thus, the lingam remained in Deoghar, becoming the Baidyanath Jyotirlinga meaning “Lord of Physicians,” due to Shiva’s healing of Ravana’s heads.
