- For those planning to visit the Goravanahalli Mahalakshmi Temple for darshan, if you reach the bus stand by 7:00 AM, you can get there quickly.
- The earlier you go, the better, because the queue lines can get very crowded, and darshan might take some time. Starting early also ensures you have enough time to return.
- There are plenty of KSRTC and private buses to Goravanahalli. From Bangalore, it’s 88 kilometers, and from Tumakuru, it’s 31 kilometers. We’re traveling from Hindupur to Goravanahalli, but you can also get buses from Madhugir
- There are only a few direct buses from Gauribidanur to Goravanahalli. If there are no buses at your travel time, you can take one of the many buses from Gauribidanur to Koratagiri and then reach Goravanahalli from there.
Our Journey to Goravanahalli
- We came from Gauribidanur to Koratagiri on our way to Goravanahalli. You can see the buses to Goravanahalli here. We planned to take this bus, but as soon as we sat down, a Karnataka bus arrived. They said it’s a direct and faster bus, so we took that one instead.
- There are plenty of Karnataka and private buses from Koratagiri. They dropped us off at Thannenalli, which is 6 km from Goravanahalli. There are share autos here, and we took a share auto to Goravanahalli. While there are direct buses, we opted for the share auto to reach faster. The share auto ticket costs ₹30.
Darshan Details and Temple Guidelines
- Darshan is free, but if you want a special darshan, you’ll need to buy a ₹100 ticket per person. You’re not allowed to break coconuts inside the temple, so you can either break them outside before entering or after you come out.
- We visited on a Tuesday. We started at 9:30 AM, and by 1:20 PM, we were in the queue line for darshan. Devotees here say Fridays are the most crowded, with a lot of rush. This is my third visit to this temple—I first came in 2013, and now I’m here again for the darshan of the goddess.
History and Significance of the Temple: A Local’s Narration
This Goravanahalli temple was established because of Srimati Kamalamma. Her original Brindavan (resting place) is here. Many years ago, when people were very poor, they used to rear cows for a living. They would take the cows to graze nearby. A voice told them, “Come to my house, come to my house,” but they ignored it, thinking it wasn’t their responsibility. The voice kept calling, saying, “I’m your mother, I’m here.” They told their mother about it, but she dismissed it, saying not to bother.
Later, the voice said, “I’m in distress, I’m Goddess Mahalakshmi in this form. Come quickly to my place.” The voice explained that she appears in the form of a conch, discus, lotus, and mace. The people became wealthy after following her instructions, and they started helping other poor people. As they grew older, they couldn’t continue, so their younger brother took over the responsibility of performing pujas and rituals.
Continuation of the Temple’s Legacy
- However, one night, a rooster crowed suddenly, which was considered inauspicious for Mahalakshmi. The mother said, “I like this place in Goravanahalli village—build a small temple here and install my idol.” So, the younger brother built the temple and installed the idol.
- After installing the idol, he continued the traditions. Srimati Kamalamma, who was unmarried, stayed in Goravanahalli village and continued performing pujas.
- Later, she became pregnant, and her master asked her, “Who made you pregnant?” She explained that it was her brother-in-law, but he denied it, saying he couldn’t provide for her child due to his poverty.
- She then left for Goravanahalli, refusing to return, and lived there, facing hardships and slander. She went to nearby villages to beg for alms, struggling to survive. Eventually, she heard a voice saying, “Don’t leave this temple—I’m here with you.” She understood and stayed, cleaning the temple and performing rituals with devotion.
Unique Features: The Nagalakatta (Sacred Trees)
In front of the Mahalakshmi Temple, you can see the Nagalakatta (sacred tree cluster). Normally, a Nagalakatta consists of a peepal tree and a neem tree, but here, you’ll find four trees: neem, peepal, tamarind, and jammi (Prosopis cineraria). Devotees tie green cloths and bangles to these trees to have their wishes fulfilled. You can see the green cloths and bangles tied here—it’s called the wish-fulfilling tree. It’s 2:25 PM now, and I’m heading for lunch.
Annadana Program and Devotee Facilities
There’s an Annadana (free food distribution) program here. It runs daily from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and again from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM.
