Temple Suryanar Koil is one of the Navagraha temples and is dedicated to Lord Surya, the Sun God, located at Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. The temple was constructed by King Kulottunga Chola I during the Chola dynasty, between 1075 and 1120 CE. It is a good example of Dravidian style with intricate carvings and a magnificent vimana, an ornate tower.
The temple opens for devotees between 6:00 am to 12:30 pm in the morning and between 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the evening. Special darshan tickets can also be taken for a price of Rs. 50, allowing devotees a closer and quicker look into the deity. The temple’s main festival, Ratha Saptami, occurs during the Tamil month of Thai, which falls between January and February, attracting thousands of devotees.
This temple accommodates the chief deity, Lord Surya, and shrines of other planet deities. Out of the plethora of temples, this one is special and it’s taken care of by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of Tamil Nadu. Its maintenance accompanied by festivals and worship goes off quite well. So, this temple is definitely a place to be visited for those needing spiritual respite and architectural beauty.
