Temple History and Significance

The Sri Garbharakshambika Sametha Sri Mullai Vanathar Temple is a remarkable shrine. Long ago, a sage named Nidrava and his wife Vedika lived here, devotedly worshipping Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. They led a happy life, but their only sorrow was not having children. To seek a child, they fervently prayed to Shiva and Parvati. One day, Vedika became pregnant, and as her delivery neared, Sage Nidrava was away.

During that time, another sage named Urdhvapadu visited their ashram. Vedika, exhausted from household chores and resting, didn’t notice his arrival and couldn’t offer him proper hospitality. Angered, Urdhvapadu, unaware that she was pregnant, cursed her. The curse caused a severe illness that began affecting her body and the fetus. In distress, Vedika prayed to Goddess Parvati, who appeared instantly and protected the fetus by placing it in a sacred pot.

The child born was nourished with milk from Kamadhenu (the divine cow). When Sage Nidrava returned and learned of this, he was overjoyed and prayed to Shiva and Parvati to stay in this place and bless future generations with safe pregnancies. Pleased with his prayers, the Goddess and Lord Shiva reside here as Garbharakshambika and Mullai Vanathar.

Temple Visit and Puja Details

There’s a puja items shop in the temple courtyard. If you specify the purpose of your puja—whether for conceiving a child, safe delivery, or other issues—they provide the necessary items. The main item is a 100-gram ghee container, which is offered after performing puja at the Garbharakshambika Temple. You take this ghee home, mix it with half a kilogram of additional ghee, and if it’s for conceiving, both husband and wife should consume it daily with food. For safe delivery, only the pregnant woman should consume it.

There’s no strict rule that you must visit in person; anyone can perform the puja and take the ghee. However, after the child is born, you should visit the temple to offer thanks.

Visiting Mullai Vanathar Temple

“Mullai” means jasmine, as this area was once a jasmine forest, hence the name Mullai Vanathar, meaning Mallikarjuna Swamy in Telugu. It’s believed to be one of the 64 places where Lord Shiva manifested himself. ‘

The Shiva lingam here is made of clay, so no water abhishekam is performed—only jasmine oil is used. Devotees believe worshipping here cures skin ailments. Photography is not allowed inside, but you can see the Shiva lingam and have darshan. There are smaller sub-shrines around the temple; do visit them.

Visiting Garbharakshambika Temple

Now, let’s visit the Garbharakshambika Temple. Opposite the Shiva temple, to the right, you’ll find the Garbharakshambika Temple. After a child is born, devotees come here, place the child in a cradle, and fulfill their vows. Photography is not allowed inside, but you can have darshan of the Goddess.
